Undergraduate Essay Contest

Essays are no longer being accepted as of April 15, 2018.

The Adelphi University Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) is conducting an essay contest open to all Adelphi University undergraduate students (male and female) who are Members of the Class of 2018. The essay contest winner will receive a $1,000 award.

Topic: Philanthropy

In your essay, please respond to the following questions: “How have you personally been involved with philanthropic efforts while a student at Adelphi? Describe your involvement and what you have learned from your experience. Looking ahead, how will philanthropy fit into your life beyond Adelphi?” 

Criteria for Essay Submission

Eligibility – Each entrant must be an Adelphi University (undergraduate) senior, graduating in May or August of 2018 and in good standing.

Format – Your entry must be typed, doubled spaced with 1 inch margins utilizing Calibri font (12); on a separate piece of paper in 500 words (2 pages) or less. 

Please include only your Student ID number in the top left corner of your essay submission.


The Office of University Advancement must receive submissions no later than 5:00 p.m. (Eastern) on April 15, 2018.

Selection Process

The winner will be selected based on the clarity and potency of message, plus compliance with entrance criteria. All submissions become the property of the WGC and may be used by the WGC in accordance with their mission.


The selected winning essay will be announced at the Parent/Senior Dinner on May 17 at The Inn at New Hyde Park, and the winner will be presented with a $1,000 check from the Women’s Giving Circle.
