Giving to Adelphi


Women’s Giving Circle Graduate Student Essay Contest

Essays will be accepted from March 20, 2019 through April 19, 2019.

The Adelphi University Women’s Giving Circle (WGC) is conducting an essay contest open to all Adelphi University graduate students (male and female) who are Members of the Class of 2019 for their graduate program. The essay contest winner will receive a $1,500 award. An additional $500 will be donated to a charity of their choice.

Topic: Philanthropy

In your essay, please respond to the following questions: “How have you personally been involved with philanthropic efforts while a student at Adelphi? Describe your involvement and what you have learned from your experience. Looking ahead, how will philanthropy fit into your life beyond Adelphi?” 

Criteria for Essay Submission

Eligibility – Each entrant must be a current Adelphi University graduate student, graduating in May or August of 2019 and in good standing.

Format – Your entry must be typed, doubled spaced with 1 inch margins utilizing Calibri font (12); in 500 words or less. 

Please include only your Student ID number in the top left corner of your essay submission.


The Office of University Advancement must receive submissions no later than 5:00 p.m. (Eastern) on April 19, 2019.

Selection Process

The winner will be selected based on the clarity and potency of message, plus compliance with entrance criteria. All submissions become the property of the WGC and may be used by the WGC in accordance with their mission.


The selected winning essay will be announced at the Legacy and Commencement Celebration on May 18 at Garden City Hotel, and the winner will be presented with a $1,500 check from the Women’s Giving Circle. An additional $500 will be donated to a charity of their choice.
